The U.S. Naval Reserve, or the Navy in its various branches, has played an important role in American society for over two centuries. The United States Naval Reserve is composed of Sailors from all branches of the military, as well as civilians ( Reservists ). Naval reservists are called to active duty in order to serve their country and protect our citizens. One of the most famous naval engagements fought during World War II was the Battle of Midway which occurred on June 7th 1942 off the coast of Hawaii. This battle resulted in a Japanese victory that allowed Japan to gain complete control over much of Pacific Asia. The USS Lexington (CV-2) was engaged in this battle and sustained extensive damage including eighteen crew killed and fifty-six wounded. While Midway may be less known than some other naval engagements, it is still remembered by many Americans due to its impact on World War II overall and on Midway itself specifically. Since then, naval reservists have played an important role in both peacekeeping operations and conflicts around the world.
