It is interesting to note that this was not the first time that A.J. had purchased a gun; he had bought one previously in 1907. He also operated a shooting gallery at his home from 1911-1912, which served as an early test bed for new firearms designs. In 1912, A.J.'s brother-in-law Prentice Schaffer donated a pistols (6) to the town of Stillwater as part of its centennial celebration. The guns were inscribed with the date 1912 on one side and “Stillwater 1914” on the other side to commemorate their donation and event. The next year saw another donation when Simeon Weagle donated two shotguns (3) to the town of Stillwater during its 100th anniversary celebration celebrations in 1915! These guns were inscribed with “Stillwater 1916” on one side and “Thank You Simeon Weagle” on the other side to commemorate their donation and event! It wasn't until 1923 that another gun was given away by members of the community when Maurice Hagerty gave away an unlicensed rifle (4) to still be stored at his home after it had been confiscated from him during Prohibition Era.[1] This weapon is significant because it is the only unlicensed firearm ever gifted away from any Oklahoma city or town[2]. After prohibition ended in 1933, gun gifting continued unabated in Oklahoma City until 1934 when Mayor John Neely announced that all handguns must be registered before being gifted out due to concerns about unauthorized possession by civilians[3]. This ban effectively stoppedgun gifting within city limits in Oklahoma City[4]. In 1935, Mayor Neely decreed that all rifles must be registered prior to being gifted out due to fears aboutroitous handling by citizens[5], but this rule did not last long as soon thereafter rifle gifting resumed within city limits without restriction! In 1938, Mayor Neely proclaimed still more stringent regulations concerning gifts once again becoming effective when Gifts registry number 2 was established within city limits[6]. At this point, gun gifting within Tulsa proper ceased completely while givings took place between neighboring cities outside of Tulsa proper such as Broken Arrow and Jenks.[7] However, Gun gifting resumed anew within Tulsa proper starting around 1946 following incorporation of Tulsa into OKC[8], albeit under more relaxed regulations than those preceding it [9].

The Stillwater area was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche peoples in the 1850s. In 1876, the United States acquired land east of the Arkansas River for a military reservation known as Fort Washakie. The town of Stillwater was founded on the fort's lands in 1881, and it became a municipally-chartered community in 1907. The post office at Stillwater served all of Oklahoma until 1959.
