Shawnee is located on the Choctaw Nation Indian Reservation. The first white settlers in what is now Shawnee arrived in 1836 as part of the Osage Tribe's forced displacement from their traditional land near present-day Tulsa. The town was named for General Jedediah Smith, who explored and surveyed much of present-day Oklahoma City before his death in 1839. In 1847, a group of Scotsmen led by Alexander Henderson established a trading post at Shawnee and began conducting business with Native Americans and other traders along the Arkansas River corridor. This early settlement left an important impact on Shawnee's economic development; it became one of the primary trading points for goods exported to Kansas City and Wichita. The Douglas family purchased the post from Henderson's heirs in 1865, becoming its first owners to live permanently in Shawnee. By 1870, Shawnee had a population of 350 residents, most of whom were farmhands employed by nearby farms or manufacturing plants such as that operated by J W Cline & Sons flour mill. In 1907, following passage by Congress granting Indian reservations self-government under American Indians law, many Indian families who had grown prosperous living off commerce on individual reservations scattered across eastern Oklahoma decided to come together and create an organized community based upon shared interests within their cultures rather than being subject to distant authority figures ashore or away on various missions or campaigns throughout history - like those undertaken by most Euroamerican nations during this time period - which often included impoverishment both spiritually (leading some people away from Christianity) as well as materially (due to closed borders).
