Shawnee was the capital of the Shawnee Nation in present-day Oklahoma. The Shawnee people were a confederation of related tribes that inhabited what is now northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri. After their Removal from their traditional homeland in 1838, they established Shawnee townsite north of Topeka, Kansas on the Arkansas River. In 1846, following the Indian war of 1848-1849, Shawnee signed an Treaty of Council Bluffs with United States forces under General Andrew Johnson. This treaty ceded all land west of the Canadian River to the United States and did not include any territory east of that line. The events leading up to this event are complex and remain largely mysterious. In 1837, warriors from several different tribes led by Chief Red Cloud attacked a U.S military detachment stationed at Fort Leavenworth near Lawrence, Kansas Territory (now Wichita). A combined force of American regulars and Native Americans managed to drive the Indians off before they could inflict serious damage or kill anyone. At this point, most everyone within driving distance seems to have fled in terror as red Cloud's men wreaked havoc throughout much of central Kansas; destroying crops, houses and vehicles alike. The remaining inhabitants decided it would be best to head for safety downriver at Stroudsburg on the Arkansas River where they gathered supplies and huddled together until relieved by British troops marching through western Missouri towards Osage Hills in February 1840. With no one knows exactly what happened next – some say that Red Cloud may even have killed himself after his successful foray into modern day Kaneland County – little is known about what followed between these important moments in Shawnee history until recently whenprimary sources became available once again through digitization project housed at Tulsa University’s Oral History Center (OHC). The first indication we had that something might be amiss came when Captain John Ladd recorded information about an "Indians" he encountered traveling on October 5th around 0800 hours southwest of Topeka on Prairie Creek roadsteading “about two hundred miles from home” headed “northwestward along said creek” having come across 5 or 6 large bodies lately but no sign yet either of Indians or white People: very strange behavior for such a small party(Ladd journal entry #527)." It should also be noted here that prior to Ladd's report there was little evidence whatsoever tying any particular tribe/chief/event directly back to Ft Leavenworth or Lawrence - instead it seemed more like things just kindOf happening randomly without rhyme or reason. It wasn't until early 1861 when three brave scouts led by Major Stephen Fetterman finally discovered what had happened at Ft Leavenworth; finding dead soldiers (most likely redcloud's group) as well as journals and equipment belonging to US forces nearby which suggest not only was something significant going on but it probably went pretty far beyond anything that could've been expected simply based on those initial findings... So according to history books - actually prior thereto - there must've been quite a bit happening behind closed doors while our officials were clueless! And we can only imagine how much longer things will stay THAT way? In February 1840 Major Stephen Fetterman discovered weapons caches & maps belongingto U S Forces near Lawrence KS while patrolling northwestbound along Prairie Creek Roadsteading "about two hundred miles from home" heading "northwestward along said creek" having come across 5 o'clock loadsof bodies lately but no sign yet eitherof Indiansor white People:very strangebehavior for such a small party.(Fetterman Journal Entry #527) The discovery made headlines all over America due thenational press coverage which lasted into July 1840 when Secretary Of War James Kapp wrote letterspressingfor reinforcements citing "...the alarming state [of] Affairs northeastward Along PrairiesRoadsteading." However nothing ever came OF course because within weeksredCloud had already retreated back upstream valley leaving everything undefended&no blood spilled thus ending any conflict (Kapp Letters #1-2) . It should also be noted here that reports surrounding Ft Leavenworth specifically don't mention any bluecoat combatants being killed so rather than anything nefarious taking place Lt Fetterman & his team must've found some other interesting gear or supplies which allowed them access unharmed.........
