It is part of the Muskogee County seat and lies on the eastern edge of Muskogee Lake. The town was founded by settlers in 1872 as a result of land grants from President Ulysses S. Grant. It became an incorporated village in 1907 and a city in 1959. Sapulpa is named after Captain John Cephus Sapulpa, whose father, George A. Sapulpa, had settled here in 1851. The first post office was established at Sapulpa on October 10, 1872, and remained open until it closed on December 17, 1875. The first settler to come to SapULPA was Wm Beattie who arrived on July 22nd 1870 with his family from Tennessee and Indian Territory (nowOklahoma). In 1907, Sapula City was incorporated after voters approved a proposition to that effect by a wide margin; it became the third largest city in Oklahoma behind Tulsa and McAlester. As an incorporated city, it enjoyed certain rights not granted to towns such as unincorporated villages or counties which were considered part of the "larger" cities; for example., it could levy its own taxes without prior approval from its governing body-the council-and could establish ordinances exclusively for itself rather than relying upon regulation by territorial or county officials. In 1959 Sapula City annexed neighboring community Dysart which had been built along Sidell Creek north of downtown during World War II as an air base auxiliary storage camp for aircraft manufactured at Wichita State University's Dow Chemical Plant adjacent to Muskogee Lake Naval Air Station (now Kelly Air Force Base). This annexation created what is now known as dysart/sapula area which has experienced rapid suburban development since thendue largely to cheap land availability combined with lack of other similarly situated communities within commuting distance both nationally and locally due principally to heavy military presence during those years
