In 1907, two men named David Bowers and Hiram Soper were driving to Wichita Falls when they came across a group of Choctaw Indians living around a trading post on the Arkansas River. When they stopped to trade goods with the tribe, they discovered that the people there knew about white men's horses and cattle so they offered them their horses in return for some cornmeal, watermelon, and other items.
