The Sapulpa, Oklahoma Army National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the early 1900s. The first units organized in Sapulpa were the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, which was formed in 1907. The regiment served in World War I and the Korean War. In 1951, the unit was redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Regiment and moved to Sapulpa from Muskogee. The regiment fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom and also participated in exercises at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 2006, the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment was re-designated as Attack Squadron One (ASO1) and relocated to Sapulpa from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. ASO1 is responsible for conducting aerial operations against targets of opportunity within eastern Oklahoma County. Since its relocation to Sapulpa, ASO1 has conducted numerous training maneuvers including air assaults on ranges near Ada and McAlester. Additionally, ASO1 participates in annual Warrior Games which are held at Will Rogers State Park with competitive events such as wrestling, archery and rifle shooting competitions among other activities. For many years now, ASO1 has been an essential part of soldier morale by providing them with leadership opportunities through their participation in these games as well as providing entertainment for spectators during tournaments. In addition to its military history, the town of Sapulpa also boasts a rich civic tradition that dates back more than 50 years. On October 16th of each year since 1978 there has been an event called "The General's Ball" which celebrates local civic pride andkerchief design contest winners from all over Coahuila Valley who come together for a night of music/dances/drinks/food/and networking purposes only a few miles away from downtown Sapulapa! This year's ball will be held on Sunday October 22nd from 6pm-11pm at Trinity United Methodist Church located off North Main Street in downtown Sapulapa! Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a small town in Muskogee County located east of the city of Tulsa. The population was 1,790 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Sapulpa was Fenton Shaver in 1881 and he built his home on the east side of Main Street. He also founded Sapulpa Academy which still exists today as a private K-12 school. In 1906, J.D. Webb bought land near the center of Sapulpa and began farming it with his brothers Wernher, Julius and John Webb. They named their farmstead Webb Farm after J.D.'s father who had died two years earlier while exploring south central Oklahoma Territory for mineral rights to what would become Tulsa County (now Muskogee County). In 1907, A&P grocery store owner James Hickey purchased Webb Farms from the Webers and opened it as a general store called "Hickey's". The first post office in Sapulpa was established here on October 17, 1907 with Wernher Webber as its first postmaster. In 1912, A&P moved to its present location across from Central High School where it remains today.( First known location) During World War I, sapulpas served in the United States Army as infantry units under command of General Pershing until they were discharged following armistice negotiations on November 11th 1918 due to lack of participation by other Native American tribes living within Indian Territory at that time including Sapulpa's own Kiowa people who fought for Mexico against US forces during that war according to oral histories preserved by some members of our community.)
