Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a city located in the eastern half of the state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,636. It lies about 30 miles (48 km) east of Tulsa and 30 miles (48 km) west of Lawton. The city's name is derived from Spanish sandalwood, which grows in abundance hereabouts. The region whence Sand Springs came originally was part of what is now Muskogee County. There were several small villages and settlements here before it was decided to founded Sand Springs by Major John Wesley Powell during his 1869 explorations through this area as far as Wichita County, Kansas Territory.
