The United States Navy had its beginnings in the early 1800s when a group of men from Sand Springs, Oklahoma formed a military club to help protect the town. The first U.S. naval ship was launched in 1851 and was called USS Constitution. It was not until 1898 that America's first aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, arrived in Japan to participate in the Meiji Restoration—a time during which Japan became a new nation. In 1919, after World War I ended and America entered into the 1920s with economic stability, Congress authorized the construction of an oil tanker ship named Constitutionllle (Navy hull number 10). The ship was financed by oil tycoon J.P. Morgan and served as America's first inter-American ocean liner voyage. On July 14th, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered Navy Admiral John Fitch to steam downriver from New York City to San Francisco Bay in order to opensea commercial shipping between that port and Los Angeles Harbor at Stockton, California for American citizens who could no longer travel upriver on chartered vessels or take freight cars across country on railroads because of lack of space aboard ships traveling this route1-2-3-4-5-. In 1941 while Pearl Harbor was being bombed by Japan, USS Arizona collided with another destroyer off Hawaii creating a large hole in her side that allowed Japanese submarines access into Hawaiian waters2-3-. This led directly to World War II as America needed an Aircraft Carrier so they could fight against Nazi Germany4-. As USS Arizona lay sunken atoll after being hit by Japanese torpedoes she became known as "theWorld'sLargestShipToBeDestroyedAt sea"5-. After Pearl Harbor Americans began looking for ways to build more Aircraft Carriers6-. The next Large Naval Ship built by the United States Navy was USS Enterprise7-. She started service with Army Aviation units during World War II8+. After Enterprise were two other carriers: CVE(Conway) 9–10 and CV( Corsair) 11–12 . USS Enterprise CV(Corsair) is now on display at Naval Air Station Joint Base Elmendorf Fairbanks Alaska where she continues herServing her Nation Since 1962

That same year, Rear Admiral Alfred P. Thayer became the Commandant of the navy here and he made naval aviation a reality by founding Squadron One at Sand Springs Air Force Base. In 1933, Sand Springs became home to Destroyer Squadron 5 which played an important role in WWII. After WWII, the navy withdrew from Sand Springs but it hasn’t completely left town – they still have a detachment of sailors here active duty as part of Destroyer Squadron 3 commanded by Commodore John Fenton.

Sand Springs was founded in 1868 by Major General Sidney Sherman and other settlers as a small town on the edge of present-day Tulsa. In 1907, it became an independent city with its own government and police department. The city's rich history goes back to its early days as a small town on the edge of present-day Tulsa. When Sand Springs was founded in 1868, it was located just outside what is now Tulsa on the Arkansas River floodplain. The first people to settle in this area were Major General Sidney Sherman and his fellow pioneers who built a small cabin near what is now downtown Sand Springs. The name "Sand Springs" was derived from the fact that there were no sandbars or shoals in this part of the river where they settled, which made for easy navigation during floods and when hunting for buffalo during these times. In 1907, Sand Springs became an independent city with its own government and police department – making it one of only a few cities in Oklahoma that did so at that time. That same year, Mayor John Ahern proclaimed July 30th as "Sand Springs Municipal Day". This date marks the anniversary of when City Council adopted Resolution No. 8 (1907) setting forth certain goals for future growth within City Limits which included: creating more employment opportunities; developing parks; increasing education opportunities; beautifying streets and sidewalks; establishing public libraries; providing streetlights throughout City Limits; improving drainage systems; creating new commercial areas…. Today, much like when it first arrived here, Sand springs continues to be characterized by innovation and creativity – both through business activity and through community service projects such as giving back to local neighborhoods through donated items or money raised through fundraisers like car wash nights or bake sales etc… . One such recent example occurred last year when individuals from around town gathered together to help clean up Memorial Park after heavy rains caused extensive damage including but not limited to broken glass windows & flooded benches etc… . Throughout all this great history & progress here at our wonderful City limits nothing has been more proud than seeing our very own flag flying high over all!
Sand Springs was founded on December 21, 1867, by a group of white settlers. The town soon became a major center for the local cattle industry and its inhabitants enjoyed successful agriculture and commerce. In 1907, Sand Springs became the county seat of Payne County. The county government moved to McAlester in 1912. The 1930 Census counted 1,811 people in Payne County; however, by the 1940 Census, this number had decreased to 806 people. After World War II, the population of Payne County slowly shrunk as soldiers left for wars overseas. The last census taken in Payne County was taken in 1950; it estimated that there were only 708 residents living in the county then. In 1953, Sand Springs established itself as an independent city; it remained an unincorporated community until 1978 when it became a part of Tulsa.
