Sand Springs is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the Arkansas River. The population was 3,890 as of 2010. It is the county seat of Stephens County and the home to the University of Central Oklahoma. The first person to settle in Sand Springs was George Hays, who arrived in 1867. In 1881, J.B. Chandler and his family founded what would become known as Chandler's grocery store. From there, the business grew and became one of the largest groceries in town. In 1930, when Stephens County was created, Sand Springs became its county seat and continues to be so today. The city also served as its primary cultural center for many years before it began to decline beginning in the 1970s with suburbanization moving into nearby townships and rural areas making way for more permanent residents and businessesstroming new development near Interstate 35W which divided Sand Springs into eastern (west side) and central (east side). As recently as 2000-2005 there were efforts underway by community members to revive downtown levels while keeping access open to pedestrians/cyclists/drivers; however these have been unsuccessful due primarily to lack of interest from developers or City Hall’s reluctance to take on this financially risky venture Today much remains unchanged from when it was an agricultural center with a few hundred people living along the riverbanks outside town limits

Sand Springs is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1907 by developers who named it for the sandstone that lay near their ranching and farming operations. The first post office was established in 1911. A store and hotel were built in 1912, and a railroad stop was added in 1913. In 1916, the name of the town changed to Sands Springs after landowner Wm. Sands donated two acres (0.8 km2) of land to establish the community as a city limits designation for Sand Springs west of Muskogee on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now I-40). The city limits were extended eastward to include present-day Claybrook Township on July 1, 1922; this annexation formed what is now Payne County's second city limits boundary south of Tulsa proper within which Sand Springs had full jurisdiction as an incorporated municipality until its annexation by Tulsa on November 5, 1925 In 1930, Sands sold his interest in Sand Springs to local oilman Harry Hays for $1 million dollars (). Hays' company oiled and services local roads and bridges throughout Tulsa from his property located just east of town along US Highway 169 where he built one of the largest pre-World War II oil storage tanks ever constructed () .Hays also developed other interests including retail stores (), professional sports teams (), agricultural crops (), manufacturing businesses (), and several housing developments (). By 1938 Sands had lost control over his East Texas rancho properties adjoining Sand Springs so there are few traces remaining today associated with him or his former business interests

In 1907, the first post office was established in Sand Springs and remained open until it closed in 1954. Despite its name, Sand Springs did not begin to develop as a commercial center until after World War II when oil exploration began nearby and new routes were developed through the area. Today, Sand Springs is an important manufacturing and trade center with a population of over 30,000 people.
