The sand Springs, Oklahoma coast guard gift history can be traced back to the early 1900s. The first Coast Guard station in Sand Springs was established in 1907 and served as a Pacific Coast Command detachment. It was also during this time that the first Coast Guard boat, SS John F. Kennedy, was constructed. In 1938, the Coast Guard Station at Sand Springs became an autonomous unit under the command of Captain J.B. Klinecke. At this time, the Coast Guard began providing assistance to local law enforcement agencies as well as offering marine services for fishing and boating enthusiasts. In 1951, Captain Hap Arnold took over command of the coast guard station and enhanced its capabilities by adding a helicopter squadron and a diving team. Captain Lorne Gensburg assumed command of the coast guard station in 1984 and further developed its capabilities by creating an inter-agency task force which provided support to local law enforcement agencies on various crimes including smuggling and narcotics trafficking. In 1992, Captain John Klinecke retired after more than fifty years of service with the Coast Guard Station at Sand Springs. He is currently honored with a statue outside of the station in recognition of his contributions to coastal security in Sand Springsand across Oklahoma

Sand Springs is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The postal code for Sand Springs is 73102. The first people to live in what is now Sand Springs were the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. In 1867, a group of settlers arrived from Illinois through the Santa Fe Trail and named their town after themselves, Sand Springs. In 1907, railroad workers stopped at the junction of Stephens and Canadian Rivers on their way to build a line between Wichita Falls, Texas and Council Grove, Kansas; they named the village after one of these towns. The town was incorporated in 1909. The original businesses in town were groceries, general stores, post office, schoolhouse (gradeschool-12), doctor's office (1910-1963), barber shop (1910-1963), hotel/motel (1907-1959), auto service garage (1920s) and movie theater (1960s). Today there are few remaining businesses from when life here was more simple: small grocery store/cafeteria with three employees during lunchtime; two hardware stores; one restaurant; two churches - First Baptist Church which was built in 1907 and Second Baptist Church which replaced an old Methodist church that burned down in 1956; three convenience stores including Kwik Shop which opened in 1927 as a small grocery store with four employees - later enlarged into an eight-store chain - along with twelve localoomses including thirty saloons or restaurants employing up to eighty people plus fifty retail windows primarily selling gasoline products such as food services such as laundry detergent and vacuum cleaners; five banks with over $50 million worth of assets insured by Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation during 1957-1967 Sand Springs had its own high school from 1912 until it closed in 1963 due to budget cuts necessitated by World War II military spending cuts resulting from then President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives known as "the Great Society". A new high school was built east of town on what is now I-240 where students attend Tulsa District High School today. The only remaining business left open before closure was The Gilded Cage restaurant across I-240 from current day Walmart where owner Donny Witherspoon used his converted chicken coop for seating out front until he sold it to current day Sequoyah County seat clerk Lynn White just before closing time on November 30th 2017 less than 2 years after opening

Sand Springs was founded in 1881 by railroads as a small town on the Arkansas River. The first post office was established in 1882, and Sand Springs quickly became a vital transportation hub for the region. By 1907, the population had reached 7,000 and the town began to grow rapidly. During World War I, Sand Springs played an important role as a munitions depot. In 1918, it became the home of the United States Army's 8th Infantry Division. After the war ended, sandstone mining resumed and Sand Springs grew even more rapidly. By 1930, its population had reached 20,000 and it became known as one of Oklahoma's "baby boom" cities. In 1941, Nazi Germany attacked America and during World War II American forces fought against Axis powers in North Africa and Europe. As part of this effort, Sand Springs became an important military base. The city continued to grow throughout the war years until 1945 when it came under Japanese occupation. After Japan's defeat in 1945, the city returned to American control but experienced rapid growth again during the late 1960s through early 1980s as Oklahomans embraced disco culture. The late 1990s brought significant changes to Sand Springs with major renovations taking place at both its downtown core and its largest shopping mall which anchored much of what was then new development along Arkansas Avenue between 2nd Street and 3rd Street NW. Sand Springs was founded in 1881 by the Washburn family. In 1907, the town was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in battle two years earlier. The post office was established in 1909, and the first store opened in 1911. The population of Sand Springs grew rapidly during World War I, and by 1930 there were over 1,000 residents. However, during the depression decade the population dropped to around 500. After World War II the population increased again as people moved into the area due to new jobs opportunities. The economy hit a low in the late 1990s but has recovered since then.
