The history of the Sand Springs Air Force Base began in 1933 when the United States Army set up a training camp at the now defunct Fort Sill in Oklahoma. The base was used for military training and air defense until World War II, when it was activated as an air force center. The first planes to be stationed at Sand Springs were Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. The war years saw a large increase in activity at the base, with both theAAF and USMC flying pilots and planes from all over America in support of allied forces. In 1945, Sand Springs became home to both USAF Headquarters and Pacific Air Forces; after that it served as an aerial refueling stop on bomber missions throughout Europe and Asia. In 1946, Sand Springs AFB was demobilized and its functions divided between various USAAF commands: Tactical Air Command (TAC), Strategic Air Command (SAC), Ninth Air Force, Twelfth Air Force, Headquarters USAF (HQ USAF) became operational at Vandenberg AFB while San Diego AFB became operational as an AAF station housingacked KC-135 Stratotankers. It was not until 1981 that HQ USAF moved back to Tulsa airport permanently; today it is known as "Chambers" Wing within HQ USAF's flew unit structure. During peacetime only a few hundred people lived on campus but during wartime this increased by several thousand residents due to overflow from nearby towns which had become military installations themselves during World War II. Many of these people who remained through peace time also played an important role in support activities such as manufacturing munitions or providing services such as nurses or laundry staff for combat troops stationed overseas.

The town became a major center for trade with its location at the confluence of the Arkansas River and the Canadian River. The town was named after General Sandusky, an American Revolutionary War general who served under George Washington. In 1907, Sand Springs became a city ruled by a mayor and six-member council. In 1921, the city merged with Ekalaka to form Wichita Falls. The area that now makes up Sand Springs was first settled by Native Americans during the Mississippian culture period. By 1700 BC, these people had built villages near present-day Wichita Falls in what is now Texas. Around 15 AD, Europeans arrived in what is now Sand Springs and began trading goods with local natives. By 1800 AD, land around present-day Sand Springs had been organized into three townships: Arapaho City (now Telluride), Dodge City, and Haskell City. In 1881, Tom Durant established what would become known as "the original" sand spring community on property northeast of present-day Wichita Falls onthe Arkansas River floodplain. Today's Hutchinson Avenue serves as one of only two remaining streets in Dodge City that were originally laid out as main thoroughfares when that town split off from Arapaho City on July 1st 1881; Hutchinson Avenue today stretches from east to west just south of downtown Wichita Falls which has grown considerably since then! In 1907, when Wichita Falls merged with Ekalaka to form Sand Springs proper, it was still an unincorporated community consisting of only a few scattered homes scattered along Hutchinson Avenue between First Street & Third Street; Wilkinson Road ran concurrent north & south across Hutchinsonsite serving primarily as an access road for residents going to work at various businesses located along Second Street (present day Veterans Memorial Drive).
