Ponca City is a small, inner-city town in Oklahoma that has been inhabited by the Ponca people for over 350 years. The town is situated on the edge of the Choctaw Nation and it was originally known as Watonga. The name "Ponca" comes from the Wichita language and it means "place where they fish." In 1851, Indian Removal Act forced the removal of all Native Americans living in Oklahoma to western states. Many of these Indians settled in what is now Ponca City. The first settlers in Ponca City were not Cherokee but white men who had come across the state looking for new land to settle. They named their community after anciently friendly Choctaw people who had helped them find their way north. When war began between America and Spain in 1846, many Spanish-speaking residents of Oklahoma decided to leave their homes and go back into Mexico because they were worried about American aggression. Only a few hundred Spaniards remained in Oklahoma when war ended two years later. The original inhabitants of Ponca City were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, beans, potatoes, fruits, vegetables and cattle until World War II when photography became popular among soldiers and civilians alike. After the war ended, most of these people moved away or died out as technology changed so rapidly. However, some families managed to stay behind and continue farming until cedar trees lined Main Street in 2010. In 1907, Ponca City became one of thirty towns established by Tulsa County commissioners under an initiative called local government solution No 1 (LGS1). This program offered citizens more control over their lives through village form government with a mayor/council system instead of traditional chiefs/governors which prevailed until 1934 when Tulsa County voters removed LGS1 from its books following dissatisfaction with its results.
