The Ponca City National Guard was organized on November 10, 1907. The first national guard unit in Oklahoma was activated on December 12, 1907. At the time the Ponca City National Guard consisted of two companies: Company A and Company B. On July 1, 1912, both companies were consolidated into one company and redesignated as Company C. On December 8, 1916, the Ponca City National Guard was reorganized and redesignated as the Oklahoma National Guard. The first battalion of the Oklahoma National Guard was mobilized on January 15, 1917 and became Companies D-1 through D-3. The second battalion mobilization occurred on April 6, 1917 and became Companies E-1 through E-3. On September 9th 1920 the Frederick Wertheimer Battalion (later known as Company F) arrived from Colorado Springs and became a part of the Oklahoma National Guardsmen Unit 2d Brigade under command of Colonel James Ransom at Vinita Army Depot east of town until it moved to Fort Reno where it also became a part of Headquarters & Headquarters Troop OKLAHOMA NATIONAL GUARD In 1937 an act was passed by Congress that recognizing World War II veteran’s activity within our borders made it necessary for all citizens who had served in any branch or division of our military during World War II to present themselves to their local post office with proof that they had been discharged or released from service before October 14th 1945 inclusive This act also provided for enrollment into certain programs which would allow these veterans free passage across state lines for educational purposes The program initiated by Postmaster General Wiley Young involved mailing certificates identifying each veteran’s name along with his date of discharge or release from service so that he could continue living in his home state without having to worry about moving every few years Oklahoma’s First Infantry Division began training at Camp Dodge in 1941 after being called up for war against Japan World War II ended with Japanese surrender on August 2nd 1945 which allowed America to enter openly into World War III Company I went back into active duty when President Harry S Truman declared martial law in America on September 16th 1947 By order dated May 7th 1951 orders were given authorizing establishment within this city limits of a civilian police force known as “the Citizen Patrol” Following completion of its initial training period approximately 125 officers were sworn in effective June 5th 1951 . This agency functioned locally until disbanding effective October 24th 1971 following termination by Mayor Kincaid due to lack Of support from civic group requesting its continued existence

The town rapidly developed as a center for cattle and oil production, becoming one of the most important towns in Oklahoma. Ponca City was renamed Okmulgee in 1924, and its growth slowed during World War II until it again experienced significant population growth following the war. In 1970, Okmulgee became an independent city and has continued to grow since then, increasing its population to over 100,000 today. Oklahoma's history is full of examples of cross-cultural interaction and commerce between Native American groups and European settlers. The area that now comprises Ponca City was first inhabited by the Kiowa Apache tribe before being pushed out by Spanish settlers in the 18th century. The area that would become Ponca City was acquired by the Indian Territory government in 1907, when territorial boundaries were redrawn following Oklahoma's admission into United States as a state. The town quickly grew as a center for cattle and oil production, becoming one of the most important towns in Oklahoma during this time period. The Ponca City area was first settled by the Pawnees in the 1830s. The city was founded on the site of a current shopping center, which was developed as a commercial stop for ranchers and farmers. In 1907, Ponca City became one of the cities in Oklahoma Territory. The city’s population peaked at over 15,000 in 1920, but it declined during World War II due to the war effort. However, the population again began to grow after the war and has remained high since then.
