Owingson is a small town in eastern Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,316 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County metropolitan area. The community's name comes from its location on the Arkansas River, about 15 miles upstream from present-day Owasso. The first people in what is now Owasso were Muslim traders and travelers who came through the area in search of trade goods and animals to sell to other Indian tribes near their homeland in Turkey. They named their village after one of these traders, Sheikh Abdul Aziz ibn Mujahid al-Walid (died 806), who had been trading with India for several years before reaching America. After his death, his trader brother conveyed the news of his death back to his family and village in Arabia Minor; they then took up residence there for some time until they could find new land where they could establish themselves permanently. When white men first arrived in this region during the early 1800s, they discovered that blacksmiths and farmers existed here already and started trading with them for goods such as hides and guns. The first white man to live permanently in Owasso was Captured Joe Brown who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street around 1836. He soon erected a gristmill which he used to power an oxen threshing machine that he bought from a Frenchman named de Lavalouse. This equipment helped him become one of the earliest farming towns west of the Mississippi River! In 1868, when Oklahoma Territory was organized, Owasso became its capital city under government guidance from Ulysses S. Grant as part of newly acquired territory east of Kansas City including all present-day Muskogee County excepting Tulsa which did not join Oklahoma until 1907! The following year saw establishment of schools within our limits: Mechanics Institute (1869), Female Seminary (1870), Black Businessmens School (1871), Presbyterian Church (1872). In 1876 construction began on what would later become downtown Owasso; it was completed by 1880! In 1902 Cherokee Nation purchased all land east of US 66 northward including much of what is now Muskogee County! When World War I erupted hostilities escalated between America’s two main allies Russia and Austria over ownership or controlof Siberia’s rich oilfields some residents decided to take sides against their countrymen by moving into Mexico but most chose instead to stay put behind high walls constructed around their homes! A post office called “Owingson” was established at this time but never served anyone because no mail ever entered or left this locality! As late as 1915 citizens reported having difficulty getting letters delivered anywhere other than Tulsa because “the postmasters have closed down our mail service everywhere else east Texas has done so also”1!! Oklahoma State University opened its doors in 1921 making it one among only a few universities open solely to students living within Oklahoma boundaries at that time2!!!
