The United States Army has a long and proud history in Owasso, Oklahoma. The area was designated as the home of the 4th Cavalry Regiment in 1907, and today the Fort Sill Army Depot is the primary location for military supplies and services for the region. The army's presence began with soldiers coming to this area during World War I to help re-establish law and order after the violence of that time. The unit that first arrived here, Company K of the 4th Cavalry Regiment, was formed on October 25, 1917 at Camp Bowie outside of Tulsa. The regiment served in Europe from 1918 until 1919 before being honorably discharged at Camp Pickett near Atlanta. The army then leased land outside of town to establish an encampment called Fort Sill in 1922. The original purpose of Fort Sill was to provide a training ground for future cavalry units but it soon became more than just that; it also functioned as a military base for local farmers and their families who were relocated here during World War II. In 1945, when Germany surrendered, the fort's role changed again when it became home to Detachment 1116f Infantry Battalion which was responsible for moving Allied prisoners-of-war off German soil into America. Today there are over 20 active duty barracks withinFort Sill which include six barracks used by members of the Texas Army National Guard; two barracks used by Air Force Reserve Command; one chapel used by both Baptist and Methodist services; three rifle ranges (two open to civilians and one restricted access); five artillery batteries (four 3 inch/50 caliber guns and one 8 inch/45 caliber gun); four educational labs (including one devoted exclusively to engineering research); two hospitals with beds for 350 patients each; housing units for 1,500 American citizens working at various sites around town; three golf courses utilized by member troops stationed here including: Ft Sill Golf Course which is open year round while portions are closed due to weather conditions or construction projects; 10 control towers located throughout Oklahoma City serving as battlefield monitoring sites should fighting erupt in any part of our state or nation A memorial garden has been established adjacent to Fort Sill since 1964 specifically honoring those who have lost their lives while serving in uniform within Oklahoma County. The Oklahoma Army National Guard has a rich history that can be found in Owasso, Oklahoma. The unit was founded on December 14, 1907 as the 9th Infantry Regiment of the Oklahoma State Military Forces. On November 15, 1916 the regiment was redesignated as the 7th Infantry Regiment and served in World War I. The regiment returned to service in World War II and participated in both campaigns against Japan and the Pacific Theater. In 1951 the regiment was redesignated as an infantry brigade and served as part of III Corps during the Korean War. After the war there were two periods where the brigade underwent a major change before being re-designated as an armored brigade in 1978. Currently, it is still designated as an infantry brigade but it also forms part of II Corps commanded by Major General George Casey role within Iraq and Afghanistan missions
Owasso, Oklahoma is a small town located in the panhandle of Oklahoma. The population was 4,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Haskell County seat. Owasso is named after the Osage people and was first settled by them in 1881. The town developed around its natural resources including oil shale, coal, and water wells. In 1907, Owasso became an official city and has since grown to encompass over ninety-five acres of land with a population of over two thousand people.
