Oklahoma City’s naval history begins with the creation of the United States Navy in 1907. The Okmulgee Naval Shipyard was founded in 1909 and became known for its construction of World War II vessels. The shipyards were closed in the 1940s, but their legacy continues to this day as a center for naval research and engineering. In 1951, the Oklahoma City Naval Shipyard reopened as an all-naval training facility. It has been serving U.S. navy personnel ever since. The USS Constitution (1845) was one of the first warships built at the shipyards. She served in both World Wars and played a significant role in helping Americans secure victory during both conflicts. Her remains are now on display at the Okmulgee Maritime Museum. Other ships that were constructed at the OKMULGEE NASYVILSHIP yards include USS Porter (1927), USS McKinney (1945), USS Griggs (1951), and USS Sims (1982). Today, Oklahoma City is home to three active Navy destroyer brigades—the 6th, 7th, and 8th Fleet Destroyer Commands—as well as twoismoarettes assigned to support them: CGU-84 “Cheyenne” and CGU-87 “Clayton” assigned to Strike Squadron 5; PAGI-39 “Cimarron” and PAGI-41 “Comanche” assigned to Patrol Squadron 3; AEGIS Ships TG 58–5 & TG 58–8 assigned to Task Group 61st Composite Division; KCNA – NAMCATM – OPCW – USCGC Polar Star & USCGC Healytown anchored off shore near Terminal Island #1; Korean American community members DASCK Frigate PCL-101 & PCL-106 moored nearby also provide support services ashore including law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical service, Harbor Surveillance Unit 1&2.,and coastal guard

Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as a republic on November 14, 1907. The state's first elections were held in January of 1908. In 1912, Oklahoma became the 36th U.S. state with voting rights granted to women. On July 1, 1907, the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature created an Indian Territory comprising all of present-day Oklahoma and parts of Texas and Kansas. The first governor of the newly formed Oklahoma Territory was Wm Boren who served from December 7, 1907 until his death on February 12, 1908.
