Oklahoma was first known for its beans. Coffee was roasted here in the early 1800s by Native Americans, and it is said that coffee beans were traded as far away as California. In 1881, a small company called The Ark started selling coffee from a few acres of land near the city of Okmulgee. By 1907, The Ark had opened a larger store in what is now the heart of Okmulgee. The years since have seen significant growth for Oklahoma's coffee industry. Today, we produce over 2 million pounds of coffee each year, and our production facility has fostered many new relationships with other partners around the world. Okmulgee is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tulsa County. The first people to live in what is now Okmulgee were the Creek Indians. They hunted and gathered food here for their own purposes as well as trading with other groups in the area. Eventually, white settlers started arriving and began appropriating Cherokee land around this area for farming purposes. When it became clear that they would not receive fair treatment from the Cherokee government, some of these settlers banded together and planned to take over control of their lands by force if necessary. This led to increased violence and conflict between whites and Cherokees throughout OKMULGEE until 1868 when Ulysses S Grant signed an executive order giving the Cherokee nation full independence from Great Britain. The town site was platted on March 17th, 1872 by General James Hance with land purchased from a group of Cherokees who had recently fled to this area during the war. Over time, Okmulgee has seen both bursts of growth (mainly due to oil production) as well as sustained declines in population due to various reasons such as relocations or relocation policies of businesses that opened up within its boundaries after oil prices plummeted in 1979-1981. However, recent efforts by city officials and developers have resurrected some life intoOkmulgee’s spirited downtown district while concurrently improving transportation options for residents and visitors alike with new development near Interstate 44/Upper Canada Road across from Central Park West Mall
