Mustang is a small town in Oklahoma. It's located in the County of Haskell, about 25 miles east of Tulsa. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. Mustang has a Main Street and two Business Streets. There are no schools in the town, but there are three churches that serve the local community. The main businesses in town are a grocery store, post office, and tire shop. The first people to live in Mustang were pioneers who came from Kansas City in 1881. They built a cabin on what is now Main Street and started to farm their land. In 1907, they founded the town of Mustang which name was derived from the fact that it had been given to them by General John Custer during his battle with Sioux Indians at Little Bighorn River Bridge near present day Tulsa. At one time there were six stores and seventy five homes in the town; however, most of these have since disappeared or been replaced by newer buildings or out-of-town residents. Since its founding, Mustang has undergone many changes including being named after President George Washington Carver (1906), being annexed by Tulsa (1911), becoming an independent city (1924), and again becoming an annexe (1960). In recent years it has experienced some growth as a result of new development such as shopping malls and restaurants within easy walking distance of its downtown area
