Muskogee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 41,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The town was named for General Andrew Johnson and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. The first white person to settle in what is now Muskogee County was James Fenton in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1828, and became part of Haskell County when that county was created from parts of Osage and Creek counties on November 1, 1829. In 1834, David Wilkinson settled near what is now downtown Muskogee. In 1840, John Haines founded the townsite of Nacogdoches along the Choctawhatchee River just east of present-day Muskogee City limits. In 1846, JF Dolan opened a store at what is now First National Bank Square in downtown Muskojee which became one of America's first commercial banking institutions In 1861, following the Civil War, much land east of US 64 were acquired by Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) for military purposes including most notably Fort Gibson which served as an important garrison during both Union and Confederate times In 1865-1866 local men raised money to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) northwest of present-day downtownMuskogee from Buffalo Bill Cody for $1 million This parcel would become known as "Cody's Field" or simply "Cody". Muskogee, Oklahoma is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Muskogee Indian Tribe has a reservation in the town. The first settler in Muskogee was James A. McFarlane, who arrived in 1881 and named his settlement after his Scottish home of Kincardine on Loch Fyne. He and four other Scotsmen - Alexander MacFarlane (1850-1924), John McHugh (1857-1935), Chas Ewing (1860-1935) and Donald McLeod (1861-1937) - founded the community on land they had bought from the Creek Nation south of what is now Tulsa City Limits. They built an log cabin with a schoolhouse and kitchen on Fourth Street near present day Griggs Avenue. A post office called Muskogee was established in 1887, but it did not remain open long due to difficulties with delivery of mail by horseback from Tulsa to the town. In 1902, a railway station was constructed along Canadian National Railway tracks just north of downtown Muskogee; this helped spur development around the railroad depot and into residential neighborhoods that were developed between 1907 and 1912: Keystone Heights to the east, Forest Hills west of Keystone Heights, Broadway east of Broadway and Northland south of Northland Avenue. In 1908, local citizens formed a school board which built a new school on Third Street across from today's Parkview Parkway Nursing Home; this became known as "Muskogee High School" until 1959 when it moved to its current location adjacent to First Baptist Church which had been built earlier that year on land donated by Mrs. Anna Ladd McClain for use as an educational institution for her muslim children who attended her Islamic School northeast of town at 7th Ave./NOB Southwestern Ave.. In 1927, construction began on what is now Tulsa State University – one of American universities founded during World War II which achieved national prominence thanks to its President Drs., Franklin D Roosevelt and Chester Arthur both serving as Nobel Prize winners – making Muskosgee one step closer towards becoming an economically viable city again! The Muskogee Nation was established in 1835 by the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit. The Muskogee people were originally from Alabama and Georgia. They crossed the Tennessee River to Oklahoma in 1839, and founded the town of Muskogee on what is now Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The Muskogees operated a fur trading post at Tulsa for many years.
