Muskogee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and the home of the Muskogee Nation Police Department. The first white settlers in what is now Muskogee were Armstrong and his party from Missouri in 1836. They named their new settlement "Oglethorpe" after General James Oglethorpe, who had explored Oklahoma Territory in 1837. The town was founded on August 15, 1853 by John A. Parkinson, an American surveyor working for the US government under contract to Custer and his men during their punitive expedition against Kiowa Indians near today's Wichita Falls, Texas. On February 20, 1863, during Confederate Kansas–Nebraska War efforts to gain independence from the Union through a peaceful transfer of power at Fort Sumner in western Kansas City (now Tulsa), Colonel Greenwood led a force into town to arrest Colonel Parkinson for treasonous activities connected with that war effort; he had earlier been elected Mayor of Muskogee as part of a coalition government formed to resist secessionist sentiment within the city limits In 1870s and 1880s several businesses were built up around railroad transportation: grain elevators became popular among farmers because they could bring ground corn inside on trains while still being able to store it; oil wells started appearing along Platte River which made this area increasingly important as a place to send goods out of Oklahoma Territory before rail transport became available elsewhere across America
