On July 4th of that year, three German submarines were sunk off of Moore Beach after reconnaissance patrols revealed potential American warships nearby (the USS Constitution was at anchor). As a result of this revelation and suspicions among some residents about why war hadn't been declared yet (the US didn't enter World War I until 1917), a public outcry ensued and Mayor Waddell ordered all citizens not to bring any arms into town] After Pearl Harbor happened in December 1941,[1], local residents decided they needed more firepower than just shotguns and rifles because they knew Japan would attack America if we didn't have them. So on January 8th 1942[2], Mayor Waddell called up all citizens within city limits and told them that they were allowed bring one rifle per household into town for personal protection purposes only.[3] This law remained in effect until May 1945 when it was repealed due to changes within the United States Army during World War II.[4][5] In 1947[6], an armory was built on Main Street near where present day First Baptist Church is located; this armory served as the main storage depot for weapons for both the local police force as well as for storing ammunition for use by government agencies such as NASA during space missions.] In 1979,[7][8] an additional armory was added onto Main Street which functioned as both a police station as well as being used by firefighters during emergencies.] As recent events have shown us all too often throughout our history books: wars don't start withdocs or guns being donated from generals or daughters - wars start when people become polarized against each other based on false information.?
