His wife Martha took over running their father's successful businesses until he passed away four years later on January 15th 1909 at the ripe old age of 71 years old with no children present to take on that responsibility alone. The adjacent town of McAlester was founded soon afterwards by local farmers who saw promise in the potential for large scale production within easy reach of them.$2 million has been raised through sales and donations ever since as part of commemorative fund-raisers hosted by both towns annually coinciding with Valentine's Day
