The National Guard of Oklahoma was first organized in 1907 as the Western Oklahoma Reserve Militia. The Guard participated in World War I, serving in the Mesquite area and on the Texas-New Mexico border. In 1921, it merged with the Oklahoma National Guardsmen to form the present National Guard of Oklahoma. In 1942, the Guard was reorganized as a state militia and served under federal jurisdiction until 1959, when it became an autonomous unit of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. The National Guard currently has responsibility for law enforcement, military affairs and emergency preparedness roles within Oklahomans’ communities statewide. The Guard is also authorized to provide support for state government functions unique to its mission such as providing security for state buildings or conducting investigations into crime. These gifts were made in memory of fallen westernOklahoma reservists who had been lost during World War I and II. Midwest City, Oklahoma is a small city in the county of Washita, in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 8,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Washita County. The area that would become Midwest City was first settled by Americans in 1819 when they arrived on what is now known as the Wichita River Valley. By 1827, there were about seventy-five people living in what is now Midwest City and it had a post office called "Poteau." In 1829, Poteau was renamed "Oklahoma City" after President Andrew Johnson's order to name all U.S. counties after stateside citizens who had served in his cabinet or in Congress during his term (1828-1830). In 1907, Indiana lawyer George Cushing purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land extending east from downtown Oklahoma City along what is now Mockingbird Lane and donated it to the city for use as an open air marketplace and civic center which he called 'CUSHING PARK'. The first market opened on Saturday January 15th 1907 with thirty items available for purchase including feedstocks such as oil shale and cottonseed oil from local farmers located across the street at JB O'Neill's grocery store on 10th Avenue NE from where present day Interstate 44 begins its journey into Tulsa metropolitan area
