Midwest City, Oklahoma is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. It was founded on November 3, 1907 by the merger of two smaller towns - Midwest City and Coal Mines. The city is named for the Missouri River, which forms its eastern border. According to the 2010 census, the population of Midwest City was 27,564. In 2013, Forbes listed Midwest City as one of "The 25 Best Places to Live in America". MidwestCity's history can be traced back to 1907 when two small towns merged - Midwest City and Coal Mines. The name Midwest City was chosen because it was opposite of Tulsa, Oklahoma's original name which had been choice due to its location on the Arkansas River just north of Tulsa proper. The first store in Northwest Side downtown opened in 1914 at 12th and Vine Streets - this building still stands today and is used as a library branch. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II thanks to its production of munitions factories supplying both sides in the warring conflict. During that time, many famous people lived and worked in or near Northwest Side including singer Gene Autry (who grew up just east of town), engineer Irving Quayle (founder/director of Lockheed Aircraft), Hollywood actor Forrest Tucker (brought over from Texas) and comedian Bob Hope (a native son). In 1965, after years spent planning and construction boom times ensued following passage of American Indian Child Welfare Act by United States Congress then-President Lyndon Johnson; Westbrook Elementary School became home to what would become known as "the most highly respected school district in OKLAHOMA." That same year saw an influx into town from nearby Tulsa due to oil natural gas prices reaching $100 per barrel making life much more affordable for those who could afford it - with such developments as high rises along NW Side becoming available for purchase at greatly discounted rates soon thereafter.
