Midwest City is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, about 25 miles south of Tulsa on Interstate 44. The population was 106,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The area now called Midwest City was first settled by Choctaw, Apache and other Native American groups in the 1820s. A post office was established in 1827, and by 1840 had a population of 100 residents. In 1851, an act to create the Indian Territory led tothe town's name change from "Cottonwood" to "Midwest City." Midwest City experienced rapid growth during the decades after its incorporation as a city in 1907; it reached a peak population of 300 people in 1920 before declining rapidly through the 1930s and 1940s due to economic despair and World War II refugees.[2] In 1962, Oklahoma State University began offering undergraduate degrees at what became known as Midwestern College while still located inside downtown Midwest City; this made Midwest City one of the few cities with both college-level courses and high-quality jobs within easy reach for many students acrossOklahoma.[3] The university has since closed down most or all its programs inside Downtown OKC but continue offerings online via Midwestern College Institute (MCI) which offers associate degree programmes[4][5]. During 2009-2010 there were protests against proposed changes that would have eliminated funding for Missouri Valley Community Colleges (MVCC) throughout much of Oklahoma including downtown OKC[6]. The protests successfully forced then Governor Fallin to veto two bills that would have reduced MVCC's budget by up to 50%. Although these protests did not achieve their original goals they did successfully force Fallin’s attention towards community colleges being important parts ofOKlahoma’s future too[7].
