Miami is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 30,813 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in both Oklahoma and Miami County. The metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people. It lies on the confluence of two rivers – the Arkansas River and the Canadian River – and is bordered by Tulsa to the east, Osage to the north, and Canadian to the west. The first inhabitants of Miami were hunters who traveled through region during their foraging trips across what is now central Oklahoma about 12,000 years ago. A band of Choctaws living near present-day Tulsa likely visited Miami in 1794 when they journeyed from their home in Georgia downriver to trade with Native Americans along this stretch of Arkansas River then connecting with Wichita further south on that stream’s tributaries (the Canadian). Spanish missionaries arrived in what is now Miami County about 1800 after invading Florida; they founded San Miguel de Allende Mission on a bluff overlooking present-day Tulsa while traveling upriver past present-day Muskogee onto an ancient Indian trading route that connected Great Lakes regions including those around Chicago with Mexican provinces including Coahuila, Nuevo León and Durango before reaching Santa Fe de la Laguna on its way back downriver to Mexico City where they distributed missions among Spanish settlers (Aguilar 1892). When American forces invaded Texas in 1836 as part of War for Independence against Mexico, General Sam Houston ordered his army into central Oklahoma for protection rather than march southeastward into Mexico as planned because he knew Mexican troops would be waiting for them there if Polk had pursued that route instead (Fowler 1979:27–29; Ladd 1935:5–7; Hargrave 1978:253). Houston’s preservationist policies led him to become one of America’s most celebrated military leaders and one of its richest men (Galloway 1990:1–4). The Miami area was first settled by the Lipan Apache. The Miami River was named for them. In 1836, the United States acquired this area from Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The land was divided into small parcels and sold to settlers. In 1840, a group of men led by Major John Crain founded the City of Oklahoma City on what is now Meridian Avenue in downtown Oklahoma City.
