Miami's history began with the opening of the Miami-Okmulgee Railroad in 1887. The community developed around this railroad and its worker housing complexes. In 1907, Miami became a city and was renamed after James A. Houston, then mayor of Tulsa. The oil boom in OKC during the late 1920s brought construction jobs to Miami and other towns near the well pads that produced oil and gas reserves. However, many people left for economic reasons in those years; many homes were built for workers who did not own them or could not afford them. After World War II ended there was a large influx of veterans from all over the country; they brought their families with them toOKC and started businesses such as grocery stores, dry cleaners, furniture stores etcetera."During this time many African Americans also moved into Miami because they had no other place to go." In recent years there has been an increase in crime rate inOKC due to gangs being active here as well as drugs trafficking which affects both inner-city areas and suburbs outside of downtown OKC."Today it is a very dangerous environment for anyone trying to live here" says one resident."It used to be much better back when things stayed simple" he continues "but now we are paying for it with our health and safety." Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as a state on November 16, 1907. It became a republic in 1907. The state's first president, George Rogers Clark, was elected in 1908 and served until his death in 1911. The first Oklahoman legislature was convened in 1912 and membership of the Oklahoma Senate increased from two to six members with the passage of a constitution that year. In 1916, Oklahoman voters approved an amendment to the OK Constitution that granted voting rights to women and established property qualifications for citizenship. A referendum passed in 1920 affirmed these changes with an even more expansive interpretation of suffrage rights including all citizens over 21 years old who could provide proof of residence within the borders of the state. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled in 1922 that women could vote without proper documentation and education requirements, which set off a decades-long battle between legislators and activists over this key right. In 1930, Tulsa Mayor James Nichols organized city officials into a municipal election commission to contestmandate by county GOP chairmen that all party candidates receive at least 25% of the vote statewide; only those who complied would be given any resources or support from city hall. In 1934, Republican Party Chairman Ben Taft ordered election workers not to offer ballots or money to registered Democrats if they won't switch their affiliation; many Democratic voters did so anyway due to poverty or political differences within their families. This led local Republicans into violence against Democrats throughout most of 1935 as well as widespread voter fraud across several cities; however Taft ultimately conceded defeat after national pressure forced him to change his stance on party governance following Birmingham v Alabama (1935). In 1938, segregationist laws were enacted by Governor Burt Shafter through executive order; these regulations banned public transportation facilities and white people from living near black people regardless of social status or economic means. African Americans were limited access not just at restaurants but also during sleepovers at friends’ homes because schools wouldn’t allow integration until 1942 when Japanese American students were reclassified as “aliens” under Executive Order 9066 - making them effectively second-class citizens deserving no legal protection under federal law despite being residents inside U S soil for centuries prior! As such “native born” citizens - regardless of race - were now categorized along racial lines instead of birthdates like everyone else at government expense while native Hawaiians continued enjoy full Constitutional Rights & benefits since 1959 despite same population size (& GIS data)!
