Mcalester is a city in the Osage Nation reservation in south-central Oklahoma. The population was 6,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ottawa County. The town of Mcalester was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1868 as part of a rancho grant from the United States government to Richard Pemberton. In 1870, Pemberton sold his holdings to Addison O'Leary and John Wills, who named their new community "Mcalester." In 1907, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) built a line from Tulsa to McAlester and proposed that the town be named after its CPR terminus, McAlester Junction. However, when CPR decided not to build at McAlesters junction and instead build a line through Muskogee Falls east of town, local residents opposed this decision and lobbied for the name "Mcalester," which they eventually got. The first post office opened in Mcalester on November 1, 1871. The town's first mayor was James Sweeny. In 1923, General Motors began manufacturing parts for Buick automobiles in nearby Flint Hills; as a result, automobile production increased significantly in Mcalesters vicinity and led to many businesses being established around that time including GM Service Station #2 on Third Street near Interstate 40 (now known as I-40 East). In 1951–1952, during World War II American soldiers were stationed at Fort Sill Army Airfield near McAlester; however because no airfields were open at that time within Oklahoma City limits due to bombing alerts then current law required all airports within city limits be used for military purposes only - this resulted in significant loss of life when bombers passing over Tulsa hit power plants or other civilian targets adjacent to downtown areas causing widespread destruction both residential and commercial buildings with up to 60% loss of roofing coverings leaving entire neighborhoods uninhabitable/uninhabitable until populations had recovered enough demolish any remaining structures authorities allowed some re-assembly but most buildings remain standing today as Art Deco style hotels now operate out of these former barracks still incorporating art deco features into present day buildings
The first white people to set foot on the present-day Oklahoma Territory were Methodist missionaries, led by John C. Frémont, in 1826. The area was part of Mexico before it was acquired by the United States in 1867. In 1907, a group of men from Dodge City organized the Oklahoma Historical Society and donated land for an museum in McAlester. The first building, erected in 1909, served as the society's headquarters until 1952 when it was moved to its present location.
