Mcalester is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John A. Mcalester and named for him. It became a city in 1907 and merged with Tulsa in 1907 to form the current city of Tulsa. The town is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, south of Catoosa and east of McAlester. According to the United States Census Bureau, Mcalester has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,593 people residing in Mcalester proper (the municipal portion), as well as 736 households outlying to it from other parts of Haskell County: 514 households within Haskell County itself; 256 households within Tulsa; and 102 household units within McAlester itself (excluding those inside Municipal limits). Mcalester, Oklahoma is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the county seat of McClester County. The population was 810 at the 2010 census, up from 672 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name "Mcalester" is from Cherokee Indian Chief McKinley's 1892 speech to Congress about his vision for a "Greater Oklahoma" which included McClester County. The town was founded by farmers in 1868 as a small trading post on the Arkansas River east of present-day McAlester. The first store in town was built by Wm Hays and became known as Hays & Co., one of the first businesses in town. In 1870, John Pemberton established an agricultural society with six acres (2 hectares) of land near present-day McAlester for educating Oklahoma children and providing them with necessary tools and equipment for farming. Pemberton donated land to McAlester Township on November 3, 1870, through his estate to provide education opportunities for future residents and also raise money to support new development around town Eagleville Road and Mission Creek Road. In 1880, Jno Atherton organized what would become the first barroom debate club in central Oklahoma when he sponsored a series of meetings at Greenwood Baptist Church across from today's KFC restaurant on US Highway 169 between 1910-1911 under the sponsorship of Representative Wm Davenport Jr.. In 1890, local merchant Chas Sells opened what would be known as world's second dry goods store in McAlesters history when he opened Sells & Sons Grocery on State Route 21 southwest of town along Eagleville Road between 1890-1892 under entrepreneurial auspices set up by his brother Charles Sellers Sr.. On October 4, 1893, McAlesters newest resident James White purchased one acre (0 hectare) southeast corner lot number 5b at Main Street/Eagleville Road intersection adjacent to now day Gadsden Elementary School property bounded by SR 21 (now US Highway 169), Elm Street/US Highway 169 east thereof northwardly one half mile (0 kilometer), current edge or southwestern boundary line between Eagleville Rd./SR 21 easTERLY side thereof westwardly two miles (1 kilometer)), then extending 1/4 mile (.50 kilometers) due southwesterly direction from said northeast corner parcel along Said Edge thence northerly 3/8 mile (.75 kilometers), currently edge or northwestern boundary line between SR 21 easTERLY side thereof westwardly 2 miles (1 kilometer)), thence continuing 1 1/4 miles (.80 kilometers) due westerly direction until said NE corner parcel becomes an open space forming boundaries with Beaver Dam Creek lying SOUTHWESTLY thereon - this original donation $200 plus interest has since been increased to $400 + interest Mcalesters incorporation date: November 3rd 1870 In 1912 Drayton Ladd started teaching school here; it later became East Central High School where after World War II it became Payne Academy before finally becoming East Central Junior High School today On July 26th 1907 Jerome Fenton built Fenton Implement Works just southwest of town on now day Main Street opposite old KFC restaurant
