Mcalester is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name Mcalester comes from the Kiowa word mahle-sett (hilltop), which means "big hill." The town begun as a small farming community in 1907 and grew slowly until it became a full-fledged city in 1923. A post office called Mcalester was established in 1907, and its first mail carrier was Isadora H. Bagley. In 1923, the city incorporated and began to build itself up as an important center of commerce and industry. As a result of this exodus, Mcalesters population dropped below 1,000 people for the first time since 1920.
