The Dennis McLenny Museum continues to operate as a learning center for students from all over Oklahoma and neighboring states interested in general American history and country life during this time period.
The first white person to live in what is now Mcalester, Oklahoma, was David Denton in 1836. A year later, the United States government founded Fort Gibson as a military post to protect the area from Indian attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1839 and most of the land around it was taken over by settlers. In 1865, the town of McAlester was established on part of the fort's land. It grew quickly because of its location and access to water resources. By 1880, McAlester had a population of over 2,000 people and it became an important trading center for the region.
