Mcalester is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1903 by settlers from central Kansas. Mcalester is named for Benjamin Mays, an early settler and postmaster in what is now Wichita County, Kansas. The first school in Mcalester was built on the knoll near the current McClain Elementary School in 1903. A second school followed in 1907 and a third school in 1909. In 1912, a four-room log building served as the first courthouse. The town’s only hospital opened its doors to patients on October 8th of that year. In 1923, oil exploration began along the McClellan–Stephens county line and new residents were drawn to Mcalester to work on rigs and pipelines while they awaited news of developments offshore. By 1925, three hotels had been built: one serving as the hotel casino; one serving as convention center; and another serving as general store and post office annexe before becoming known as Sells Hotel/Convention Center later that year. A fire destroyed most of downtown McClain on October 9th of 1926 after exploding during a dance performance by local girls attended by boys from nearby Norcross High School; no one was injured but much property damage resulted including extensive destruction to businesses within blocks of Sells Hotel/ Convention Center including several stores located just east of Interstate 35W between Sells Boulevard (now US 421) and McGowan Boulevard (now I-35W). The rebuilding process took some time but ultimately it became possible for business owners to reopen their stores following insurance advances from American General Life Insurance Company which would then become McLaws National Life Insurance Company when it merged with State Farm Corporation in 1930 succeeding its predecessor Hagerty National Life Insurance Company which had originated with Ewing Motor Car Coorporated back East prior to Federation days recessing all life insurance operations westward under a single organization due primarilyto prohibitionist sentiment prevailing at that time among many Americans living inside thoseOklahoma boundaries especially since many small farmers still operated entailed horse-drawn buggies which were considered “the best way to transportation goods anywhere outside thoseOklahoma limits because no railroad could touch them without getting caught up in prohibition regulations” according to historian Don Armstrong writing about history & culture Visit OK History online today
