The town was established on a cypress swamp near the present day intersection of State Road 10 and U.S. Highway 41. In 1907, the post office was moved to Lawton from Poteau and later renamed for Colonel John Dickson Haskell (1851-1927), a military leader during World War I who also served as Oklahoma’s first governor. In 1925, Lawton incorporate as a city and soon became an important transportation hub connecting the east side of Oklahoma City with western Tulsa County and points beyond. The city continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1960 when it annexed parts of Tulsa County including the towns of Wagon Wheel and Jenks.
