This allowed for increased employment and development within Lawton as well as new business ventures such as ranches and golf courses which continue to thrive today. In 1939, following Oklahoma's entry into World War II, Lawton saw an increase in military activity due to preparations for war; this led to an increase in truck traffic on Sipco Rd., which caused pollution problems for nearby towns such as Jenks and Okmulgee. In 1941 Union Carbide Corporation opened its operations at 501 N Main St.; this led to increased development around Railroad Ave., especially among students at Oklahoma State University who were Lot 9 property developers during this time period After World War II ended in 1945, there were several setbacks experienced by Lawnton: most notably a lack of jobs and population growth brought about by post-war prosperity; however some positive aspects include major renovations initiatives completed throughout downtown including new streetscape (including enlarged sidewalks), reconstruction of governmental facilities (such as new police stations) and significant infrastructure investments like a water supply system and sewer lines that have continued into the 21st century . Although many challenges still remaincurrent economic trends are causing joblessness rates across Tulsa Countyto soar while few opportunities exist for advancement within government or business sectors
Lawton was founded in 1881 by John Lawton and his wife Sarah. The town developed around the railroad junction at what is now Interstate 40. Lawton became a center for cattle drives, and the first electric lights were used in 1904. In 1907, the town built its first school, which still stands today.
