The Oklahoma National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-recognized organizations in the United States. Established on September 15, 1907 by a proclamation of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Guard has rcvd numerous donations from individuals, businesses and governments throughout its history. One of the most famous gifts to the Guard was given by George Patton in 1944. At that time, Patton was Lieutenant General Commanding The Third Infantry Division and donated 350 rifles, 100 shotguns, 10 machine guns and other supplies to the Guard. This gift helped boost morale within the unit and gave soldiers an opportunity to become more involved in their community. Other large donors include cattle ranchers who offered their animals for free milking during World War II; oil companies who contributed millions of dollars towards military research; banks which have given money towards scholarships for guardsmen; and finally, Lawton resident Roy Pruitt in 1984 donated $500,000 for the construction of a new unit headquarters at Fort Sill. This donation officially opened up ceremonies for members of The Oklahoma National Guard from all across Oklahom

The Lawton, Oklahoma National Guard was established on November 1, 1907. The first members of the Guard were sworn in at Fort Worth Army Barracks on December 8, 1907. In 1911 the Guard moved to its present location at Lawton Army Depot. The National Guard has played an important role in the community since it was established and continues to serve today.
Lawton is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. Lawton was founded in 1881 by J.D. Lawton and others as the townsite of Black Mesa. The name "Lawton" was chosen because one of its first settlers, John Dillard Lawton, had purchased land there in 1868 from the Creek Nation for $1 million dollars. The first post office in Lawton was established on November 1, 1881, and received its mail from Tulsa. By 1912, it had grown to include a school and a hotel/motel. In 1915, when Tulsa became an independent city, Lawsonton merged with that city to become Lawtonton (an official name until 1907). When Oklahoma Statehood was granted to Oklahoma on November 16th 1907 by US President James Kenedy Sr., Lawsonton became part of the new state boundaries and continued to use its original name until changed back to Black Mesa on January 1st 1909 under then-Secretary of State George Hennepin (now Washington D C). On January 1st 1909 all other Muskogee County Towns were also renamed as Municipalities according to Act No 784 which amended the OK Statutes at that time: "All municipal corporations and places within said county Shall be named after certain persons or places thereof who have been conspicuous by their virtues or services thereto during recent years." Among these newly renamed townships were Black Mesa Township...Lawtonton Township...Henderson Township...and Snyder Township which formed what is now Muskogee County proper including present day Lawton village
