Lawton is a city in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 21,532 at the 2010 census. Lawton is the county seat of Stephens County. It lies along the Arkansas River on the border of Catoosa and Haskell counties. The name "Lawton" originated from settlers' location near a ford over the Arkansas River. The history of Lawton begins with two families who arrived in 1881 during Tellico Creek's Flooding and were forced to leave their homes due to unsafe water conditions. The first white settler in Lawton was Tom Carey who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1886. By 1901, lawlessness had become an issue in the community after cattle rustlers and other bandits terrorized residents with impunity. A group of citizens led by J.D Hinton formed the Lawtons Bank & Trust Company which became one of Tulsa's most successful businesses during its early years. In 1907, local developer John Witherspoon developed downtown Lawton into a vibrant commercial center that included several large hotels and restaurants including The Cotton Eagle Hotel which still stands today as one of Tulsa's largest buildings! In 1922, oil was discovered in Haskell County and quickly became one of Stephens County's leading industries; however, oil production failed to meet expectations and soon all but ceased due to depletion caused by World War IIealousalism; following which downtown Lawton slowly declined until 1978 when it experienced its rebirth as an central business district following House Bill No. 5981 which aimed to revitalize downtown areas throughout Tulsa metropolitan area by authorizing creation of tax increment financing districts (TIFDs) for downtown developments within specific boundaries! This saw Downtown LawTON reborn as home to several high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and Sears while also creating thousands jobsites during its transformation! Since then it has continued experiencing growth through various stages such as renovation/update/rehabilitation/new construction culminating with its current renaissance under Mayor Randy Smith where he has continues working collaboratively with developers to make DowntownLawton even more vibrant & exciting than ever before!

The marine Corps has a rich history that goes back to the early days of American military engagement. In 1775, Marines were part of the Continental Army and fought in the Battle of Saratoga. The Marines have played an important role in many wars since then, including World War II, the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Lawton is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, and the county seat of Muskogee County. The population was 95,552 at the 2010 census. It is in Muskogee County, but is part of Tulsa County. Lawton is located on the Arkansas River and its primary business districts are downtown and north east side near where it joins Tulsa Street. The first settlers to this area were Native Americans who called it "Ahtna" (meaning place for deer). In 1839, pioneer Captain James Hance established a trading post here with his partner John Salisbury. By 1840, Lawton had a population of about 50 people. The original courthouse was built in 1845 by Captain Hance and used until 1861 when the town was moved to its present location on Second Street NE by commissioners Daniel Davenport and William Selbin from Greenwood Township. In 1872, attorney Wm Sibley removed all watercourses out of range of white settlers so that he could purchase land here for $1 per acre (0.50 per sq mi). He named his new town Lawton after himself; it became an incorporated village in 1907. The name may have been chosen because there was no other Wichita or Osage community with that name within 100 miles (160 km). In 1904, oil well drilling began in this area which led to rapid growth of Lawton as an oil production center over the next few decades; today it remains one of several major oil producing regions in Oklahoma City metropolitan area! In 1951-1952 local officials organized what came to be known as the "Muskogee Faire" which drew many visitors from all over eastern Oklahoma for exhibits and music performances at Municipal Auditorium on Main Street NW corner First Avenue NW before continuing down First Avenue North to Lawtons Market Place just off US 231/New Mexico Ave SW between Tulsa & Elm Streets NW also known as "The Ghetto." [This event helped spur development around LAWTON'S newly developed Safety Park now home to many businesses including fast food restaurants] During World War II much effort went into developing munitions manufacturing here including P-47 Thunderbolts fighter planes produced at OKC's Rock Island Arsenal along with other war-time industry such as munition canning plants and armament storage facilities; these activities continue even today with some modern day successor companies such as Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Inc., Raytheon Missile Systems Co., ATK Missiles & Space Company.] Today lawton has become an important cultural center for Tulsa County due largely to its rich history dating back more than two centuries! Many events throughout that time period were held here like powwows etcetera making LAWTON one stop shop for Oklahomans interested in their culture while visiting other parts of our state or Nation!
