In 1969, Lawton annexd neighboring Moore County to form a new municipality which still includes most of what has been called "LawTON" today - with only some development around courthouse square since then! Today's downtown core is home to several large businesses - such as Sears Holding Corporation (sales), Tyson Foods Inc., Macy's Department Store and Wells Fargo Bank - as well as numerous smaller shops and restaurants. The arts are also very strong in Lawton with several performing arts venues – including the Heard Museum of American Art (the first museum in Tulsa) and Oktoberfest grounds – as well as several professional hockey teams located hereabouts (the Oklahoma City Barons/Oklahoma City Blades/Gray Jets).
