Lawton is a small town in far eastern Oklahoma, located about an hour's drive from the state capital of Oklahoma City. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee-Oklahoma City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by John Lawton and his wife Sarah Morrow Lawton on a cattle ranch east of present-day Lawton. The townsite was named after Judge David Denny, who presided over the first court session in the area on November 14, 1887. The first store opened in 1889. By 1907, Lawton had a school and two churches; the first Methodist church was built in 1903 and additions were made to it in 1922 and 1957 respectively. The town changed its name to Lawton in 1909 when it merged with nearby McAlester to form McAlester-Lawton Township. In 1916, all of McAlester Township became Muskogee County when Tulsa county was created; according to local legend, Justice William McKinney overruled a decision by President Wilson thatMuskogee County should be divided between Tulsa and Oklahoma City counties due to lack of population density within those two cities alone. The merger resulted in more than doubling the population of Lawton from 2,000 residents at the time to 10,000 by 1925 thanks largely to growth around McAlester Airport which began operations as an open field airstrip in 1919 and quickly became one of Tulsa’s major economic engines during both World War I and World War II Zane Grey film production took place at McAlester Airport starring such stars as Claudette Colbert and Lon Chaney Jr., while other businesses grew up around lawling such as Hartsfield Air Force Base (now Kirtland AFB) which opened in 1951 followed by Norman Rockwell’s Klein Field Airport opening less than a year later becoming home for OKC/Tulsa Regional Airlines until it merged with Mesa Airlines back into Airways America Incorporated four years later then closed its doors for good following bankruptcy proceedings that led to its closure also resulting in loss for several thousand jobs throughout much of this period including many that were lost within Air America itself during this time period also contributing significantly thereto stated below another article entitled “Air America: Closing Its Doors Forever?” LAWTON – LAST STANDING TOWN IN MUSKOGE COUNTY
