Lawton is a town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The name "Lawton" was given to the town by General George Armstrong Custer during his Indian Wars campaign in 1875. The first permanent settlement in Lawton was made on November 8, 1881 by A.W. and Fannie Weller with 10 families from Ada County, Kansas. They named their new community after General Emory Lawton who had been instrumental in repelling an American force from Fort Riley, Kansas on October 20th, 1879. The Wellers were descendants of Captain Elijah Weller who fought for the British against Spanish forces at Palo Alto Hill on December 6th, 1776. A post office called Lawton was established in 1888, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1906 the US Rubber Company built a plant near present day Lawton to produce rubber products for export overseas. This gave impetus to growth within the community and led to the construction of additional buildings over time including a schoolhouse (1893), Masonic lodge (1903), courthouse (1907) and jail (1914). In 1935 Lawton incorporated as a city under state law which made it one of only five cities statewide that did not have to pass a referendum before incorporation; this status has since been revoked due to lack of support from Mayor Bill Whitehurst During World War II many local businesses contributed materials or labor towards production at various munitions factories across Oklahoma City; these include: Kaiser-Frazier Paper Company (1942-1945), Mayflower Machine & Tool Works(1945-1950), Midland Steel Inc.(1950-1951) and Dow Chemical Co.(1951-1960). After the war many businesses closed down but subsequent redevelopment reestablished many local companies including Kaiser-Frazier Paper Company again(1969), Mayflower Machine & Tool Works Again(1978), Midland Steel Inc.(1981), Dow Chemical Co.(1983) and most recently Kaiser Paper companyclosed its doors for good in 2009 after more than 100 years business operating there
