Lawton was a small town in the Haskell County, Oklahoma Territory, United States. It was founded by settlers in 1866. The population of Lawton at the time of its incorporation as a municipal corporation was 1,553. The first post office at Lawton was established on December 10, 1867. In 1886, the town became the home of Judge John Denton who served as District Attorney for Haskell County from 1889 to 1895. After his death in 1897, Lawton became the home of Judge James A. Hills until his death in 1923. In 1907, Lawton erected a frame courthouse which still stands today and is used as a Municipal Court building. In 1915, Lawton annexed what is now east side of town to form a new municipality; this annexation caused the town's population to decline until it reached its present size of 814 residents in 1935). The first post office at Lawton closed on December 10th 1870 because mail service between Indian Territory and Kansas had not arrived by that date. However, an act of Congress passed December 15th 1870 reopened the post office with mail service arriving on January 1st 1871 despite problems with delivery due to lack of horses and wagons needed for such an important task! In 1916, during World War I (the US war effort), Lawton furnished supplies to several military units stationed in Mesquite Valley about 20 miles west of Lawton; these troops were quartered at nearby Bristow Army Camp until they could be moved nearer Tulsa when hostilities ended on November 11th 1918 . After World War I ended, many local businesses closed because there was no market for their goods outside of Oklahoma City or Tulsa . Some local businesses that survived include Wagon Wheel Cafe (founded 1922), Lumberyard Supply Company (1925-1927), Grain Millinery Store & Warehouse (established 1927), Mrs. Capps Hardware store (opened 1931) and finally Girdersmiths department store which opened in 1951 after being vacant since 1930s
