The Artisan Coffee Company, founded in Lawton in 1907, was the first coffee shop in town. It was a smalloperation with only four employees and three cups of coffee. The Artisan Coffee Company continued to serve coffee until 1954 when it closed its doors for good.
Lawton is located in thereek county, Oklahoma. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Tulsa County after Tulsa. Lawton is one of three cities in the metropolitan area of Tulsa which are included in the Tulsa-Bartlesville Metropolitan Statistical Area and make up a combined population of 11,921 people. The history of Lawton begins with two families who began farming land near what is now downtown Lawton in 1881. The first store on Third Street opened its doors in 1903 and served as a nucleus for what would become today's downtown business district. In 1907, J.P. Hickey founded his own grocery store, becoming one of Lawton's early commercial leaders. By 1912, Hickey had built a large home on First Street that became known as "the White House." Mr. Hickey was an important factor in developing local education with his establishment of the Payne School District No 3 which educated children from pre-Kindergarten through high school between 1909 and 1918; however he also donated land to Bartlesville High School which became Bartlesville University Park (now known as Moorehead Stadium). In 1927 Judge Wickersham O'Neal purchased 6 acres adjoining his ranch house east of town from J P Hickey for use as a community park or “parkway” connecting Lawton with nearby Bartlesville and Chickasha townships through open space that still exists today within sight of downtown LAWTON! Judge O’Neal envisioned this open space – bounded by Fourth Avenue north to south, Fourth Street east to west – as a major center for recreational activity including baseball games, dances etc., giving LAWTON its name: L A W T N E Y . In 1931 Mayor John Fenton established the city government under charter #1 with precincts organized into wards numbered 1-8 rural areas having no voting power until after World War II when they were reorganized into districts #1-3 under mayor Fenton’s direction followed by ward 4 later renamed District 5 then finally Ward 6 because it contained some new residents coming into town during this time period….LAWTON WORLD DANCE CENTERopened its doors July 15th 1951 just over 50 years ago! This world class facility has been instrumental in bringing manyOklahomaan celebrities like Tito Jackson & Whitney Houston to our community throughout their careers…..Today LAWTON continues to be an economic anchor for Tulsa County while providing quality cultural experiences to all who visit!

Lawton was founded in 1867 by Edwin Lawton and his father, David Lawton. The town was named for Edwin's uncle, William H. Lawton, a Territorial legislator who had represented the area in the Kansas House of Representatives. The first post office at Lawton was established in 1869. By 1915, when it became a city, lawTON had a population of over 25,000 people and was one of the largest towns east of the Mississippi River. The city's success as a manufacturing center is traceable to its location overlooking the Cimarron River valley and its access to railroad transportation that allowed for easy production of goods exported to markets all across America. In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, LawTON also became known for its architecture which reflects Russian Mission Revival and other traditional Oklahoma styles. This cultural heritage is commemorated today with many historical museums located in downtown LawTON including the Tulsa County courthouse which served asLawTON's municipal building from 1901-1967; and an outdoor exhibit at the Guthrie County Courthouse which tells the story of local agriculture and ranching through exhibits on permanent display. In recent years, new development has begun to impact downtown Lawton as well as surrounding neighborhoods such as Chesapeake Park (the site of what used to be an extensive munitions plant) and University Heights (a residential neighborhood adjacent to Oklahoma State University).
