Lawton, Oklahoma is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Tulsa County and the namesake of Lawton County Courthouse. The first person to live in Lawton was John Wesley Powell on December 12, 1872. He had been driving a wagon from Muskogee to Pawnee when he came across an Indian village and considered it his home until he could find a more permanent location for himself. In 1890, Lawton's first post office opened with mail from Wichita Falls, Texas. The town grew rapidly due to mining operations conducted by the Wellman Mining Company and other businesses during the early 20th century. A civic hall was built in 1915 and dedicated by Mayor Jens Rasmussen as "The People's Hall". By 1930, Lawton had over 5500 residents and depended primarily upon local agriculture for its sustenance. However, during World War II certain industries (such as munitions manufacturing) flourished which led to increased prosperity for Lawton citizens. As a result of this growth, many new buildings were constructed such as churches (including one dedicated to Methodism), schools (including OK High School), libraries (including OK State University), and hospitals; most notably Oral Roberts University which now employs over 10,000 people across eight campuses located in Tulsa-lawtons largest employer-and Shawnee Mission National Forest east ofLawton on whose parcels grow major crops such as corn, soybeans, cottonseed oilseed production etc., constituting one of North America’s leading agricultural regions In 1950s several cemeteries were developed including: Elmwood Cemetery & Gardens near downtown; Spring Hill Cemetery & Park just south of Interstate 44; DeKalb Memorial Park northwest of town center In 1962 Tulsa voters approved an amendment to Constitution creating Lincoln County which merged with Oklahoma City County In 1984 Tulsa voters authorized creation of lawtons second congressional district comprising all present Osage Hills townships within limits established by reapportionment following special election held that year On November 3rd 2001 Mayor David Davenport declared a state emergency due to Hurricane Charley followed by federal funding for recovery efforts announced later that day A tornado struck downtown on May 9th 2011 making it one time per decade or so where tornadoes occur in Lawton
When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, it had only three squadrons. The first squadron was activated on 1 October 1947 and flew the Republic F-84L Banshee, one of the most iconic aircraft of that era. In 1951, the USAF grew to its present size with the activation of two more squadrons. One was activated on 1 July 1952 and became known as the First Tactical Fighter Squadron (FTFS). The second unit, activation on 15 May 1953 as Second Tactical Fighter Squadron (STFS), also flew Republic F-86L Sabre jets which were very successful in air combat. On 16 December 1957, both Squadrons were renamed as fighter wings and were designated 601st Tactical Fighter Wing (601 TFW) at Edwards AFB in California and 602nd Tactical Fighter Wing (602 TFW) at Dyess AFB in Texas respectively. In 1959, these wings gained their own independent command structures which remain today: 601st FW operates from Davis-Monthan AFB AZ while 602nd FW operates from Tinker AFB OKlahoma. turbofan technology became available foriatric airplanes such as the Lockheed C-130E Hercules in 1965 which allowed for longer range aerial refueling operations than ever before making air force deployments much less expensive. This new technology also led to increased numbers of different types of aircraft being deployed including jet bombers such as America's first operational Boeing 707 bomber squadron – The 319th Bombardment Squadron equipped with Boeing 727s – becoming part of XXI Bomber Command during Operation Desert Storm; while tactical fighters like McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets replaced aging propeller driven interceptor planes throughout Southeast Asia during various campaigns beginning with Operation Rolling Thunder in Thailand then continuing into Operation Canopus against Vietnamese targets starting with My Lai massacre and finally Phnom Penh unless specifically exempted by Headquarters USAF or specific mission requirements may call for a different type or model aircraft depending upon theatre hostilities or contingencies

Lawton is a city in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,883 at the 2010 census. It was named after General John Lawton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and Battle of Buena Vista. The town was founded by pioneers on the site of what is now known as Lawton Field. On July 16, 1875,Oklahoma Territorial Legislature passed an act naming the town after General John Lawton to commemorate his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek two years earlier. In 1907, a post office was established in Lawton Field and remained in operation until it closed on September 15, 1907. In 1912, a new courthouse replaced the original courthouse built in 1875 on the same site. The courthouse became operational on November 1st 1912 and served as both local and territorial courtrooms until its closure in 1978. In 1914-15 there were several floods that destroyed much of downtown Lawton but no damage was done to the courthouse which remains standing today. On May 25th 1906 a tornado struckLawton killing three people and injuring many more including some who were working inside the mill when it happened; this event helped start "tornado Alley" throughout Indian Territory as residents took shelter indoors during tornadoes that would strike later that year.
