Jenks, Oklahoma is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Jenks is considered an agricultural center due to its location on the Arkansas River and its production of corn, soybeans, and other crops. Jenks is also home to the Jenks-Boyd Air Force Base which serves as a base for the United States Air Force's 5th Wing located at Tinker Air Force Base. The first known permanent settler in Jenks was James Boyd who came from Canada in 1887. He founded a post office in 1889 and named it after his father-in-law Benjamin Boyd who had settled near Tulsa. In 1902, Jenssen & Company bought land in what is now Jenks from Ira Jenssen for $2 per acre ($ today). They built a flour mill on the new site which they operated until 1922 when they sold it to A&P Coffee Company for $40 per acre ($ today). In 1925, A&P moved their operations to Decatur where they continued to operate until 1977 when they merged with Peet's Coffee Corporation (now PepsiCo) form one of the largest coffee companies in history. In 1949, cigarettes were introduced into Jenks by Arthur Andersen & Sons which became one of America's leading cigarette manufacturers before merging with RCA Victor Music Incorporated in 1957 to become CBS Records Incorporated (later Sony Pictures Entertainment). During World War II many residents served as war heroes including pilots like Lt./ Maj.(jg.) Clyde Cagle who flew Spitfires from RAF Lakenheath; Sgt./Lt.(jg.) Johnnie Cochran flying P-51 Mustangs from Midway Island; Capt./ Maj.(jg.) Hoyt Smerdon flying B-24 Liberators over Japan; and Pvt./ Lt.(jg.) Chester Epps flew bombers over Normandy during Operation Overlord. Some residents also worked at Boeing Aircraft plants such as Don Davies who worked on 747s while others worked at local rubber plantations such as Phil Gramlich who grew rubber trees on his property that yielded latex oil used by Ford Motor Co.. The town was renamed "Jenkins" after General Electric cofounder Edwin H. Jenkins Jr.. In 1984 GE made an agreement with Phillips Petroleum Products Corporation whereby GE would sell Phillips products under the name GEICO through Philips Retail Stores across America while Philips would produce allianced products line such as gasolineand kerosene under the name Pacific Life Insurance Company (PLIC). After years of talks PLIC finally agreed to buy all assets of GEICO and merged with Travelers insurance company formingTravelers Insurance Group plc., headquartered in Stamford Connecticut (U.S.). On July 1st 2003 travel agents traded their individual stock certificates for common stock certificates numbering 478 million shares each representing 6% of total outstanding shares of PLIC plc.. Plc.'s share value increased 400% overnight! This event signaled the beginning of an age where companies are purchased entire by another company resulting in more job security for employees across different businesses
