Jenks, Oklahoma is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,321 at the 2010 census. Jenks is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1906 by George A. Jenks and his wife Anna. The first store in Jenks was built on what is now the corner of First Street and Delaware Avenue. In 1912, the Jenks family bought a farm north of town and moved there to become farmers. From 1922 to 1944, Jenks had its own school district which included parts of Haskell and Tulsa counties. In 1927, George A. Jenks died and his son-in-law Wm Henson took over as head teacher for the Jenkins School District #5 in JenksAvenue Elementary School #1 (now First Baptist Church). In 1934 Wm Henson married Rosie Beavers with whom he had two children: John Beavers (born 1935) who became an insurance agent, and Betty Beavers (baptized December 11th 1938). Betty later married Lew Wallace who served as Mayor of Tulsa from 1978 to 1981; they divorced after he won the mayoral election that year but remain friends from their time together in Tulsa City Hall. In 1945, when World War II began, many residents of Haskell County decided to stay home because there were no military encampments open for people living near Tulsa or Wichita Falls; instead they enlisted or volunteered in local units such as the Oklahoma National Guard or USAAF fighter planes being stationed at nearby Tinker Air Force Base. The U.S. government designated Jenks as a town in 1907 and named it after Chief Joseph Jenks of the Kiowa nation. The city was founded on what is now the eastern edge of Jenks Municipal Park. In 1913, Jenks became one of six cities in Oklahoma to receive an electric streetcar system called OK Railway Company Line 1A. The line ran from Tulsa to Jenks and terminated at an intersection with State Highway 30 south of town. OK Railway Company Line 2 opened between Tulsa and Jenks in 1924, makingJenkins the only city east of Interstate 40 to have both lines open simultaneously.
