Guymon, Oklahoma is home to the national guard. The Oklahoma National Guard was founded in 1907 as the Rough Riders of the American Revolution. The first unit was called the 1st Infantry Regiment and it served in World War I. After World War I, the regiment became part of the American Expeditionary Force and fought in Europe. In 1921, it became known as Infantry Troop A and served in Korea. After Korea, it participated in ceremonies at White House for Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. It also served as a component of Operation Neptune’s Spear which invaded Iraq on August 29th, 2003. Following Operation Neptune’s Spear, the regiment disbanded on October 1st, 2003. The Oklahoma National Guard now has an active duty force of over 3800 soldiers and airmen who serve across Oklahoma with distinction both past and present. The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1790. The first national guard unit was raised in West Virginia in 1792. In 1816, Massachusetts formed their own national guard unit and it was not until 1860 that the National Guard became an permanent part of the U.S. military.
Guymon was a small town in Oklahoma until the 1930s. It was located on the Canadian River, about twenty miles west of Tulsa. The first white settler in Guymon was John Bunch, who arrived in 1894. By 1912, the population of Guymon had grown to around fifty people. Guymon became a municipality in 1913 and experienced some growth during World War I. However, post-war growth slowed down as agricultural production increased and other towns mushroomed near by. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, however, things changed when oil began to be found in Indian Territory south of Tulsa. With drilling rigs available for rent at low prices, businesses started rapidly popping up all over eastern Oklahoma – including Guymon. The rapid development of Guymon caused many problems for locals; it created tension between local farmers and business owners. For example, one business owner alleged that he was being charged more than his competitors for goods he sold because he had an oil well nearby! Additionally, construction workers were often required to work long hours for little pay; this led to health concerns for residents who worked outside the home. In the 1940s and 1950s, however, things started to change as the American economy grew more stable overall. This led to an increase in jobs throughout eastern Oklahoma – which benefited both businesses and locals alike. In addition, many new housing developments were built nearby; this helped improve life quality for residents while adding value to their homes). In recent years too (the past five years), there has been a resurgence of interest among developers in exploring reclamation efforts adjacent to or within reach ofGuyMONtOWNevelopment Zone".
