Guymon is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, located on the east side of the state. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. The name "Guymon" was given to the community by members of the original settlers in 1881. The first residents of Guymon were farmers and their families who arrived in 1881 from Wichita, Kansas. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River. In 1902, they erected a white schoolhouse and started to raise crops and livestock. The post office was founded in 1907, and within two years had become an important center for trade with neighboring towns along the Arkansas River. In 1911, Guymon became one of twelve towns comprising Haskell County when it was created from parts of Noble and Osage counties. At that time, it consisted of only five buildings: a school house, courthouse, physician's office/hospital, grocery store and livery stable. By 1925, however, all but two of those structures had been destroyed or replaced by new ones; nevertheless, social life continued to develop around the old courtship dance pavilion (now known as the Community Hall), which served as both public meeting place and social hall until 1951. The collapse of World War II led to a sharp decrease in population growth in Haskell County between 1945 and 1950; accordingly, few physical features remain associated with early Guymon life other than its nameakesharing importance among local citizens during this period - most notably during dances at the pavilion which often featured country music concerts outdoors (a rarity at that time).
