Guymon, Oklahoma is a city located in eastern Haskell County, Oklahoma. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The town of Guymon was founded on October 16, 1879 by Captain John Cofer and his wife Anna Belle Cofer. The first post office in town was established on December 1, 1879. The first store in town was the Indian Trading Post which opened on December 3, 1879. On May 25, 1880 the first school in town was started with a class of 10 students. In 1886 when Oklahoma became a state it included Haskell County and the town of Guymon became part of that county. On November 6th 1907 however when Haskell County was split into three counties ( Stephens County - east side of US-580 + west side of Canadian River), the boundaries for Guymon changed and it still remains within Haskell County today though its population has grown to over 12,000 people! In 1850, U.S. soldiers burned down part of the Dutch Trading Post at Java because they were not able to buy enough coffee to meet their military needs. This event marked the beginning of commercial production of coffee in Indonesia. In 1865, The United States bought 2 million acres of land near Mount Coffee in order to establish plantations there for exportation of roasted beans (this was also during this time that John Denton established his own plantation). From this point forward until about World War II when Indonesian production peaked due to increased demand from Europe and Japan for coffee grounds/coffeebeans/, Indonesian producers enjoyed monopoly pricing on world markets for their product

Guymon is home to The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), which opened its doors to students on September 3, 1907. UCO offers undergraduate degrees in business administration and engineering; graduate degrees include master's degrees in business administration and engineering.
