Guymon is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Guymon was Hemanus Salter who came to the area in 1881. He erected a cabin on the edge of a hill about two miles west of present-day Guymon. The community was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his family when they moved from Dakota Territory to this area during the early 1880s. Guymon had its start as an agricultural center with three stores and one school serving the town's population of about 100 people in 1922. A post office was established at Guymon in 1923, and mail service continued until 1974 when it was discontinued due to lack of customers. In 1954, an oil well was discovered near present-day Guymon and by 1960 it had produced over 100,000 barrels of oil per day! In 1967, construction began on what would become known as "The Wall" or "The Pipeline". This project involved building a high enough wall around the well so that apiapanal could not be extracted without having serious environmental consequences. After years of construction and debate, The Wall finally went into production operations in 1971! During the late 20th century and into the 21st century, there were several major changes taking place within Guymon itself: 1) Population growth led to increased housing needs which caused many businesses to close their doors; 2) Agricultural production began to decline because farmers no longer had access to markets outside of Oklahoma City; 3) Some residents shifted towards more tourist-oriented activities such as visiting art galleries or theme parks; 4) However, other businesses continue to operate unique unto themselves such as The Oasis restaurant which has been operating since 1951
