Guymon is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,513 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Tulsa metropolitan area and is part of the Tulsa-Canton, OK Combined Statistical Area. Guymon is one of five cities that make up the Tulsa–Canton, OK Metropolitan Statistical Area. Guymon was founded in 1907 by settler John Fenton and his family. The town name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where buffalo roam." The first post office was established in 1909. In 1916, Guymon became a city and was renamed after Judge Hennepin Mott Gilbert, who had served as a justice on the Oklahoma Territorial Court before becoming a federal judge in 1907. In 2003, Guymon began to experience rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of Tulsa for people working in major medical centers or other businesses located close to downtown Tulsa or I-40. As more businesses moved into town and jobs increased along with housing prices, school enrollment exploded as well; now there are over 50 high schools and colleges within reach of downtown Guymon for students seeking education or work opportunities near home.
